Surface Level Problems

3’ x 4’

Oil Painting

The suffocating feeling of being trapped within your own mind while being dismissed. The stigma of mental health is that we shouldn’t bring it up, or that we get told it’s not as big of a problem as we say, especially as a woman. With this piece, I wanted to use a surreal environment to capture this feeling of being stuck in this mental space. Pictured is a woman swimming in her own head, while her thoughts swirl around her, wrapping around and closing her in. She is swimming and yelling to escape, but seems to be stuck within the painting. The canvas is presented as a glass box that encloses the woman, preventing her from escaping.
